The History of Club
The History of FC “Sheriff”
Foundation of the Club – 4 April, 1997

The debut of football team “Tiras” took place in summer 1996 when it was declared for participating in Division “B” of the National Championship of Moldova. Before the beginning of the second leg “Sheriff” Ltd. became the general sponsor of the team. On 4 April, 1997, the sports club of the same name was established and headed by “Sheriff” Ltd. President Mr. Victor Gushan.

The team was entrusted with the task – to come into the National Division of the Championship of Moldova.

For realization of that, Mr. A. Aleskerov was appointed to the position of head coach as an experienced tutor and form master who had worked with clubs of Soviet football top league. As a result of that “Sheriff” team left other teams of Division “A” behind and came into the National Division of Moldova.

The debut of "Sheriff"" team in the National Division took place at the Tiraspol city Stadium on 11 July, 1998.

The day 27 May, 1999, went down in history of FC “Sheriff” as a golden line. The Moldova Cup Final match: "Constructorul" - “Sheriff”. It was the incredible dramatic and nerve-strain match between the worthy rivals. The regular time ended in a draw 1:1, and during the overtime the “golden” goal was scored on the 109th minute. For the first time "Sheriff" team became the holder of Moldova Cup. In the next season "Sheriff" became the Silver medalist of Moldova Championship.

 “Golden double” – 2000/2001

The most of specialists agreed in opinion that "Sheriff" would become the main opponent to the multiple champion of Moldova – “Zimbru” team from Chisinau.

All happened like that. Four legs before the end of the Championship the fate of gold medals was practically being decided in the duel between “Zimbru” and “Sheriff”. This match took place at the base of “Zimbru” FC and finished in the result 1:3. “Sheriff” became the leader. 4 last games were won by the team from Tiraspol and on the 12th of June at the Tiraspol city Stadium President of Football Federation of Moldova Mr. Pavel Chebanu presented the team with the Champion Cup and gold medals.

At plays for Moldova Cup, "Sheriff" reached the final where the opponent was “Nistru” team. The decisive Cup match took place in Chisinau at the Republic Stadium on May 23, 2001. Regular and extra time ended by a score 0:0. The Holder of the Cup had to be determined by the penalty shoot-out. Four players from both teams successfully defeated goals of opponents, but only the last shoot was parried by the “Sheriff” goalkeeper that brought the victory to his team. Thus “Sheriff” made the “golden double” winning all awards of the season
.

The second “Golden double” - 2001/2002

In the 11th Championship of Moldova “Sheriff” started on August 4. The current champion and holder of Moldova Cup began the season without swinging. As a result, the team finished the first round on the first place, having advantage of 9 points over “Zimbru” – the eightfold champion of Moldova.

The second round of the 11th Championship of Moldova started in spring 2002. Carrying out the whole second round on the high level, “Sheriff” ahead of time and 6 legs before the end of the Championship became the twice champion of Moldova.

2002/2003 Season

That was the very successful season for the Club on the international scene. After the good start in the Moldova championship there came a time to pass an examination at the traditional Commonwealth Cup competitions in Moscow. Under the direction of Gabi Pele Balint “Sheriff” could achieve the impressive result. Having won without problems in their group, our lads in play-off matches defeated by turns FBC “Kaunas” by score 3:0 (in quarterfinal), “Locomotiv” from Moscow – 1:0 (in semifinal) and “Sconto” from Riga – 2:1 (in final). Christian Tudor became the best scorer of the tournament with his 9 goals scored. Moreover, the “Sheriff” striker distinguished himself both in semifinal and final where he scored at the 30th second of the match.

In the same season “Sheriff” became the champion of Moldova for the third time having won the title several legs before the end of the championship in the match against “Zimbru” from Chisinau (3:0) on which 13 000 spectators were presented that was unusual for Moldova championships.

2003/2004 Season

One more year in Moldova passed under the star of “Sheriff”. The first trophy was won in autumn, 2003. That was the first Super Cup match in the history of Moldavian football between the best teams – “Sheriff” and “Zimbru”. The match was played at the Main Arena of Sports Complex “Sheriff” and brought the victory to our team by score 2:0. The autumnal part in the championship succeeded not entirely, however “Sheriff” finished the first half at the head of the fixture list. Changing of the coach in the winter period led to the benefit for the Club. The team managed to reach the semifinal at the Commonwealth Cup competitions in Moscow, and regular, already the fourth Champion title was won three legs before the end of the tournament. “Sheriff” could win the third trophy as well but failed to beat its old opponent – “Zimbru” from Chisinau – in the Moldova Cup final. On the whole, the tradition remained – “Sheriff” won two trophies per season.

In that season “Sheriff” became the champion of Moldova for the fourth time.

2004/2005 Season

2004/2005 Season passed once again marked by advantage of “Sheriff” in Moldova championship. The football year was started with regularly scheduled, already the second victory in the Moldova Super Cup. The only goal scored by Alberto Blanco in the second half of the match versus “Zimbru” replenished the Club showcase with some more trophy – the 10th in a row. Leonid Kuchuk’s team could finish the first part of the championship with the best results in the National Division – 14 wins in 14 matches. However, in the away match against “Dacia” the home team managed to win back during the extra time. The second part of the championship did not come so easy to our team. Nevertheless, “Sheriff” could break away from “Nistru” for 17 points. Our team was never winning the championship so confidently. The only tournaments where “Sheriff” did not achieve a success were the Commonwealth Cup in winter and Moldova Cup. Razvan Cocis with his 12 goals managed to take the third place among scorers and Nikolay Zhosan became the best player in making assists.

“Golden double” - 2005/2006

2005/2006 Season became the real gallop through the Moldavian fields for the “Sheriff” players. Our team never played all matches of Championship in National Division so confidently and smoothly yet. Already after the first leg our team left the opponents behind and this breakaway increased with each leg. There were ten victorious matches in a row. Several matches were lacking to set the League record.

However, not this was the main thing. The lossless series continued for 18 games. The only disappointment came from the neighbors. “Sheriff” lost the game against “Tiligul-Tiras” at the end of March, but the main match of the season was yet to come. The semifinal duel at the Moldova Cup against “Zimbru” from Chisinau proved to all once more who was the master of the situation.

Having won a victory at home over their age-old rivals by score 2-1, in the second-leg match the team of Leonid Kuchuk proved itself as the real team of strong character. The pitch turned into the dirty mash, unjustified sending Alexander Epureanu off the field in the end of the first half and hostile behaviour of supporters from Chisinau left a mark on the game. But even those circumstances did not prevent “Sheriff” from reaching the final. The goal scored by Razvan Cocis three minutes before the end of extra time paved the way to the main Cup match where the eternal finalist of these competitions “Nistru” from Ataki was beaten by score 2-0. In that way “Sheriff” virtually won the Super Cup too. According to the Championship Regulations, in the event that the same team won both the Championship and Cup, the Super Cup of Moldova was not held.

As well in that season Alexey Kuchuk brought glory both to the Club and himself scored 13 goals as the best striker, and the best sniper of the Moldova Cup also became the player of our team – Samuel Yeboah who scored 10 goals. It was remarkable that in the list of the Cup best scorers the first 4 places were occupied by the “Sheriff” players only. On the second line - Razvan Cocis with his 7 goals (the third place in the Championship sniper list – 10 goals), on the third one – Serghei Alexeev with 5 goals, and Alexey Kuchuk and Oleg Gumenyuk scored 4 goals each. Our team scored most of all – 57 goals and conceded less – 11 goals. No matches were lost at home, only “Zimbru” from Chisinau was let gain points already in the unimportant match which ended in the 0-0 draw. From 28 matches of the Championship “Sheriff” did not concede goals in 19 matches (9 of which in a row) and had more victories than others with large score – 7. In addition, our Club was one of the very correct clubs. And no wonder that just “Sheriff” became the most visited and so the most popular team of the season.
