José Flores: «This interest showed that I was on the right track»
Brazilian striker José Hugo Gonçalves Flores became one of the first newcomers to FC Sheriff in 2026.
The 26-year-old native of Rio de Janeiro joined the Tiraspol club after a successful spell with SFK Bălți, where he played 21 matches in the first half of the season, scoring seven goals and providing three assists. Previously, Jose played in the Lithuanian championship for FC Babrungas.
The forward is already familiar with Moldovan football and has had a chance to experience the level of the championship, including in matches against Sheriff. In an interview for the club's official website, Jose Flores spoke about his emotions regarding the transfer, his goals for the season, his adaptation to the team, and his expectations for this new stage in his career.
– Jose, welcome! What was your first reaction when you first learned of our club's interest?
– Thank you very much. I was very happy. The interest from a team like Sheriff made me think and realize that I am indeed on the right track in my career.
– How do you feel about becoming a player for Moldova's most successful club?
– I feel very happy and, at the same time, extremely motivated. I want to help the team and win even more titles with Sheriff.
– What was the key factor in your decision to transfer?
– My decision was driven by my passion for soccer and the greatness of this club. I understand that Sheriff is a level that will help me grow not only as an athlete but also as a person. Here, I will be able to become a different, stronger player.
– You are already familiar with the Moldovan championship. How would you describe the level of the league and who do you consider the favorite in the fight for gold?
– It is an interesting championship with a lot of physical struggle. Every match can be called a real war. There are no easy games here. And my favorite, without a doubt, is FC Sheriff Tiraspol.
– In the first phase of the championship, you played against Sheriff. What impression did the team make on you then?
– I came to Moldova already knowing that Sheriff is the strongest team in the country. I knew about the importance of this club, and that's what motivated me to play in this league. After the match against the “yellow and blacks,” all my doubts disappeared – it's really hard to play against this team.
– What role do you see for yourself in the new team and what personal goals have you set for the season?
– I want to be a player who helps the team: unites teammates, simplifies the game, creates opportunities. As for personal goals, they are standard for a striker – to score as many goals as possible and bring results.
– In the first part of the season, you scored seven goals and made several assists. What do you consider to be your strongest qualities?
– My main qualities are evident in the final third of the field: dribbling, speed, and the ability to improvise. I like to take control of the game and create dangerous moments.
– How comfortable are you in the right wing position and are you ready to play in other attacking positions?
– I feel comfortable in any position in attack. I understand that each role requires a different approach, but the result is always the same – goals or assists.
– How is your adaptation to Tiraspol and the new team going?
– Everything is going very well. This is a new and special experience for me, and it is very motivating. I communicate most with Rai Lopez, who is my compatriot. But I have already established good rapport with the whole team. There is a very good and competitive team here – and that is the key to the success of a winning team.
– What would you like to say to Sheriff FC fans before starting your journey with the club?
– I want to tell the fans that they can trust me. I will always give my all for the team. Every match will be a battle, with dedication and a desire to win. I am happy to be here and hope to convey this joy to the fans in the form of goals. I look forward to seeing you at the stadium.
