Denis Pudja: ”I happy to work in FC Sheriff”
The Croatian fitness specialist Denis Pudja has been working in FC Sheriff for over a month. The official site of the club talked to the young specialist who told about himself and also about principles of the team’s physical preparation while training camps.

Denis, tell us a little about yourself…
I played football as an amateur until I started to study this kind of sports from the scientific point. I played for kids and youth teams. When I started to learn the sports science, then I decided to concern on physical preparation. My learning lasted for five years, then I started to work in Lokomotiv Zagreb. I also worked individually with athletes from different kinds of sports but mainly with football players. This was my main experience before transferring to FC Sheriff.

How did you decide to move to FC Sheriff?
I talked to one person and he recommended me to try my forces in FC Sheriff. When I had a chance to work in the club which encourages good European football, I did not think long. I am happy I work in FC Sheriff.

What things should be paid attention to while training camps?
The team should be trained in a way so that they could spend the whole season on a good level. The main focus is drawn to such aspects as sustaining power and strength training. Right physical works helps to prevent from injuries. The main thing to get the team to the level at which it can be trained during the whole season. Player’s day schedule is also controlled at the training camps, it concerns nutrition, sleeping and their work at the training sessions. It is all very important.

Can you say after the month of training that all players came back from vacation functionally prepared?
I cannot say about everyone because there was difference in their readiness. Since I have started to work with our players not a long time ago, I cannot say definitely why there was such difference: either due to different preparation during vacation, or due to difference in physiology. Now not all players are at the high level of preparation but it is absolutely normal for this period, for this training approach.

Do you agree that your work consists of individual preparation character of each player?
Yes, it is the main aspect of my program. The work is done in different methods. At the initial stage it is connected with inspection and observation of the organism’s reaction to training sessions. Of course, further we will try to work with every player individually but it is not very easy when there are twenty five people in the team. So we try to find an optimal program for all players.

You probably know about working methods on physical preparation of the clubs in different countries. Are there any general principles in those methods and every country has its own approach to this aspect?
There is a difference. Mainly it depends on the coaching stuff working in the club. Coaches from different countries work in football. To my opinion, the main difference is that how much general and specific work is applied towards the players. Some systems offer mainly basic preparation, some of them – specific one. It is not always noticed, but it will be the main factors which will show the difference in preparation.
